Server Change & Viruses

Last weekend I moved this blog to a new server. I know I lost a few comments so if yours was one of them I apologize.
Not long after the change I got a virus on my computer. That’s why I’ve been gone for the past week. And it made me have a big realization…
I had all of my business stuff saved on that computer and didn’t have it backed up.
Luckily I didn’t lose everything on the hard drive. I’m getting all of the stuff I need off of it and then it needs to be completely erased.
I was about due for a new computer anyway so I ended up just buying a new one. This time I installed DeepFreeze on it so I don’t have to worry about viruses anymore.
DeepFreeze is a program that a lot of corporations/schools and other public places use to keep their computers safe.
The way it works is it makes a backup copy of all the stuff on your computer when you first install it. Then anytime your restart your computer it loads that backup copy. Anything that’s installed after is automatically deleted.
So even if I do get a virus on this computer all I have to do is turn the computer off and the virus will be removed. And any changes the virus makes to my computer will be reversed.
And beyond that I’ll have the old computer as a backup just in case anything else should happen to it.

Wow, thanks for informing about DeepFreeze. I hadn’t heard of that one before, definitely worth looking into!
Also, you had some amazing luck there, not losing everything. Take your karma and pay it forward!
what actually happened to your computer? and how did your hard drive survive?
Deep Freeze is very useful. I’ve used it on servers before and it works great.
With the cost of hosting coming down so far, especially with Amazon’s hosting, is it really worth your while to maintain a server?
Why don’t you just pay someone else to maintain it and save yourself the headache?
Wow, that’s a pretty extreme measure to take, but who can argue with results? I keep thinking that someday I’ll backup my important files… I should probably do that as soon as I get home. Thanks for sharing your story.
Adam: The virus deleted some of my windows files so most of the programs on my computer wouldn’t run anymore. But most of the other stuff was fine. So I copied all the stuff I needed on to my new computer and then just reformatted the hard drive. But everything’s running fine now so I’m happy.
Adam: I’d imagine it would be a headache trying to maintain my own server. But I’m not managing it myself. I installed Deep Freeze on my laptop not on a server.
