The regular examination of your roof is one thing that you would like to permanently feature in your monthly itinerary. Since the roof protects you from the external forces such as rain and thunderstorm, it deserves a constant look-in from time to time.

One of them are the roof shingles that act as a protective shield for your home. Due to the continuous exposure to the external forces and bearing the brunt of the rains and storms, the shingles become pale and less shiny.

The polish and the shine of your roof shingles can be restored by the application of the commercially available product known as oxygen bleach. It uses oxygen to remove stains/grease from the surface of the shingles and associated roofing components.

Wash the surface area of the roof with the help of a broom and a bucket of hot water. Scrub the surface well to remove debris from the edges of the tiles and shingles. Once a clean area is rendered, move to the next step.

Prepare the mixture of oxygen bleach and water in a garden sprayer which pumps out the water. The amount of oxygen to be dissolved in the solution depends on the concentration of the bleach. Also, some suggestions regarding the same can be obtained from the label of the oxygen bleach solution.

Kick off the actual task by taking the garden sprayer to the roof and applying the oxygen bleach on the shingles of the roof. Make sure that the areas of the shingles which look more dark and greasy, are handled first. Start off with one coating of the bleach and follow it up with another coating such that the water solution flows down the roof. Allow the oxygen bleach solution to stay on the surface of the shingles for some time. Meanwhile, try to remove the stains with the gentle application of the garden hose. Thereafter, wash off the area with the garden hose with the mouth of the hose held close to the surface of the shingles.

By the time you finish off the watering job, the stains would have been removed from the shingles. If however the stain persists then apply another coating of the oxygen bleach solution and wash it off.

The complications however have to be handled by a professional roofer only.
