As a homeowner, it’s your duty to maintain the home and inspect the things. For smooth running of things, you need to be little attentive. Plumbing is one aspect that is needed to be taken care of. Here we will discuss a checklist that will help you in looking for plumbing problems. If you will follow the checklist line by line, you can maintain your home’s plumbing.

Prepare a list in your mind of all the pipes and faucets where water supply goes in your home so that you can check all of them. It includes all the water pipes of your house, all the faucets, shower head, bathtub, laundry facility (washer, utility sinks and drains) etc.

First of all check the water pressure. Water pressure means the force with which water comes out of sink faucets and shower heads. Low water pressure can be a sign of sediment build up in the faucet or shower head. Problem in the water line could also be a cause of it. Accumulation of sediment on shower head may also cause a lower water pressure.

Check drain of each sink, shower and tub for the speed of drainage. Slow drainage normally indicates a clog in the drain. When water is draining, if bubbles appear in it then it is a sign of some problem. To check all the faucets in your home, turn on all of them to see if there is any water coming out of the handles and valves.

Check the flush of toilet by pushing the flush button. Also check if water is leaking after flushing by putting some colored food grain. Examine the tank in toilet and find out whether any part is rusted, broken or missing.

Leakage around shower, sink or bathtub is indicated by loose, hollow or cracked tiles around them. Check the caulking around your sink, shower as it helps in preventing leakage.

Look into the burner chamber of your water heater. Check whether there are any flakes of rust inside the chamber or it is fine. Also check the flame of water heater. It should be blue in color with no signs of yellow in the flame. If you find a yellow color, this may mean that the jet needs a cleaning. You should drain the water heater to remove sediment that may have built up in it.

If you will run this checklist once or twice in a year then you can make your home plumbing system efficient and prevent the occurrence of any big problem. It can save a lot of money for you that would otherwise be wasted in repairing any big problem. Hence, inspecting home plumbing system periodically is very essential.
