When you think of major sports events, there’s always a trophy at the end. A contest without a trophy doesn’t seem like a competition at all. Because it’s the ultimate aim in every contest. It’s the symbol of what the participants are fighting for.

Trophies aren’t exclusive to physical contests. Even a local elementary school gives away a trophy to the winner of their Spelling Bee contest. Cooking contests, pie-eating contests, beauty pageants, talent contests, and almost any match that measures skills and talents also utilize trophy as the ultimate prize.

And, believe it or not, there is also a need for trophies at the workplace. It doesn’t always have to be a prize for the game champions.

The management normally gives appreciation plaques to employees who have done a great job to show that their hard work is recognized and greatly valued. Whatever their place in the office is, they will strive to do more because they know they are respected members of the unit.

And if plaques are about showing appreciation, trophies can be a source of balance in the office. How so? A trophy shouldn’t just be about serious things. It can be used as an amusing reminder that a workplace is composed of people who work with each other.

Organizing an annual “awards show” can help attain that. Staff members can vote for their colleagues for hilarious categories, such as an award for the most deserving worker who has drunk the most cups of coffee in a day or a trophy for the office Karaoke King or Dancing Queen for the talents they have exhibited one time during an office party.

The awards aren’t to ignite the competitive nature of the workers. They must be funny and inoffensive, and not at all somber. With this awards show, workers will hopefully be reminded that even though they need to focus and give their best while working, they should also have time to loosen up and enjoy their colleagues’ company. They may be in that place to work, but they are also working with their fellow workers.

That’s one way of creating balance in the work place. Although the whole year has been stressful for everyone, an “awards show” once a year will make it entertaining. Laughing with each other will help decrease the stress and tension in the office.
